What an excellent article! I wish a paper here in Alberta would carry something like this.

There are a lot of Jewish kids that go to the same high school as my daughter, and are a big part of her social group. Their parents tend to be very well educated and be financially well off. These Jewish kids are nice, polite, well behaved and a lot of fun. Most appear to be smart (they get good marks in highly academic programs), are involved in school teams and leadership programs and there is no question that their parents have high expectations for the for kids. There is an assumption, just as in my family, that the kids will to go on to university and become a professional of some sort. The same ambition I have and want my kids to have.
It is certainly easier when your family has enough money that tuition isn't a problem, or if you need help, there is money for tutors. What I have noticed is that there is a cultural respect for learning.
Yes, the families have money. They have earned it, with with several generations of well educated people people who are willing to work hard to get where they want to go.

Is a University or College education still frowned upon today?
by Richie inafter about 8 months of "silence", i took the initiative to visit my daughter, who is an active jw - i wanted to see her, as i bought some good nutritional supplements which i wanted to give to her for her children.
she was kind but somewhat distant - we embraced each other and then talked a little bit about non-essential things.
she showed me my granddaughter, who is about 10 months old - very cute and so pretty.

Interesting thread, and I was wondering the same thing lately.
In real life, I only know about 5 JW teenagers. Of those at least 4 are already going or are planning to go on to university. I know in the cases of the families who have kids planning on college, that at least one of the parents in each family is a convert and has a univerisity education him/herself.
In some ways, this can help keep teens "in line" and at home. With tuition costs rising, a JW teen who wanted to go to college, might be more cautious so that they are not kicked out of their home, or have their parents refuse to help them with educational costs.

Hi Out at 22,
I'm not a step Mom, but I have had 2 of them. I think that at the best of times, it can be both a joy and a difficult relationship. Hmm, tips, remember that their Dad was their Dad before you came on the scene, and in marrying him, you get a package deal. Let the kids have some time alone with their Dad. Your aren't their Mom, but that doesn't mean you can't find a special place in their lives.
I had the best relationship with the step Mom who hadn't had kids herself. She is a great person, but......doesn't know how to react like a Mom or act like a Mom, but kind of wants that role. Hard to explain. I 'm saddened by the fact that she has grown away from us and my children since my Dad passed away 10 years ago. My kids thought of her as Grandma and miss her.
